The Master Life
September 6th, 2010
Last month Christendom said goodbye to Avery Willis, affectionately known as “Mr. Master Life” in honor of the program of discipleship he produced, taught, and lived out so notably. The making of “disciples” is one of the most elemental tenets of Christianity, however it is not emphasized to the degree that it once was in the life of the church. When Jesus gave His “Great Commission” to his disciples, as recorded in Mat. 28:19-20, He says “Make disciples of all nations … teaching them to observe all things I commanded you.” Our work of evangelization is not finished until a person becomes a “fruit bearing” Christian. Even then, all persons need on-going discipleship. (more…)

Eat, Pray, Love?
August 23rd, 2010
We have been hearing it often, of late – eat, pray, love. This slogan is the title of author Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling book. Now it is the title of a recent movie release staring Julia Roberts and other big names. The 2006 book is a memoir chronicling the author’s trip around the world and what she discovered through the process of these travels. (more…)

The Forgiveness of God
August 13th, 2010
The war in Afghanistan is now America’s longest war. Not long ago it surpassed our length of involvement in Vietnam. There are a number of things at stake. Among them is a way of life. Islamic extremists hate the freedom of the West and seek to impose man-made rules upon the people and enforce the keeping of those rules through threats of imprisonment, torture, and even death. Life for them is about rigid adherence to rules, regulations, and laws. (more…)

TV, Culture and the Human Heart
August 4th, 2010
Have you ever noticed the kind of things that entertain us as Americans? We are a culture no longer amused by I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver, and Gilligan’s Island. In the 70s, a shift was taking place toward a more racy type of fair. Archie Bunker, Fred Sanford, and the cast of Three’s Company were sharply different than what had ever come before. In the 80s we saw the advent of the prime-time soaps like Dallas, Dynasty, Knotts Landing, and Falcon Crest, as sitcoms and dramas grew a little more risqué. In the 90s, we saw the first “R” rated television show in NYPD Blue along with other programming which pushed the envelope. In the past decade there has been an even more interesting shift through the advent of the “Reality” show. Ironically these programs are anything but reality! (more…)

Do You See Sin as God Sees Sin?
July 28th, 2010
We would like to think we are on the same page as God when it comes to all issues, particularly the really big and important stuff, but I fear that we often do not see things quite the way that He does. There is no area in which this is more true than where our sin is concerned. We commonly judge ourselves in light of how we compare with other people all the while failing to judge ourselves in light of God’s Word. (more…)

The Place of Preaching in a Postmodern World
July 20th, 2010
The rate of change in every area of life has accelerated beyond our ability to comprehend over the last several decades. The world, since it’s beginning, has always been changing, however prior to the 20th century, people by and large, saw the world only change modestly over the course of their entire lifetimes. Partly that was due to life spans being significantly shorter than what they are today and partly because change happened at a much slower pace. In the modern era, change is happening so rapidly that products are obsolete shortly after they hit the market and are quickly replaced by something else. The rate at which we receive information is enormous. The internet, in particular, has magnified exponentially what we can know and how fast we can know it. (more…)

Is All Racism Politically Incorrect?
June 21st, 2010
You have, no doubt, seen the television ads for Geico Insurance. This company is so large that they have been running multiple ad campaigns simultaneously for years! The one I find most interesting, even fascinating is the one which features a caveman. In many ways the ads are funny as the poor caveman always gets picked on and made fun of. The tag line is that “switching to Geico is so easy that even a caveman can do it.” Each time the caveman walks away in disgust saying “unbelievable.” The obvious implication is that cavemen are underdeveloped and just not very smart. What Can We Learn From “Big Bad John”?
June 15th, 2010
This past Sunday (June 13), singer, actor, and sausage pioneer Jimmy Dean died at the age of 81. To one generation he was a singer whose deep and penetrating voice was often talked about in the same conversations as the likes of Ernest Tubb and Tennessee Ernie Ford, and to another as the familiar face promoting his own brand of breakfast sausage and related products. Seeing God in the Gulf of Mexico
June 1st, 2010
It has now been 40+ days and the massive oil well in The Gulf of Mexico continues gushing unimaginable amounts of crude into the ocean. After decades of off-shore drilling, the practice seemed to have become rather routine however, we were wrong. In life we can expect the unexpected. There have been other massive oil spills in history including a major one in June, 1979 (known as the Ixtoc in the Gulf of Mexico) and another in March 1989 in Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska when the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground. When things like this occur mankind is once again brought face-to-face with a reality. That reality is just how helpless he really is! (more…)

Is Truth Driving, or Merely a Passenger?
May 28th, 2010
It has been said, “The person who won’t change his mind to line up with the truth will change the truth to line up with his mind.” (Kent Crockett) Recently the State of Arizona put into place a law to protect their borders against an influx of illegal aliens from crossing over from Mexico. These illegal aliens were responsible for the murder of a prominent rancher in the southern part of the state, as well as drug trafficking, armed robbery, rape, etc. Phoenix is now more dangerous than any other city in America, including places like Los Angeles and New York. The federal government, spanning about 3 presidential administrations, has failed to secure our southern border. There has been much talk and little action. (more…)
