The Golden Compass Points in a Bad Direction

I suppose we should not be surprised. Satan is always attempting to poison the truth. His technique, used quite successfully over the centuries I might add, has been to make counterfeits which look rather close to the truth. Well, he is at it again!

The Golden Compass is the first in a planned trilogy based on author Philip Pullman’s dark and evil books set to open in theaters Friday, December 7th. In simplest terms, The Golden Compass is the antithesis of C.S. Lewis’ classic work, The Chronicles of Narnia. Both the characters and the plot parallel those in Narnia, but with evil, even demented twists. Satan’s shrewd approach even involves use of well known stars to draw in the box office faithful. Most notable among them Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter, Sam Elliott as Lee Scoresby, and Kathy Bates as Hester.

To quote an article in a recent publication, “The entire series has been dubbed the ‘anti-Narnia,’ with Pullman regularly expressing disdain for C.S. Lewis’s fictional world and even once calling it ‘propaganda in the service of a life-hating ideology.’ ” Pullman has sought to write a completely different fictional tale, and he has succeeded. He said in a 2001 interview, “I am trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief,” and two years later told another newspaper, “My books are about killing God.” In fact, in the third volume of this series, and I quote, “While Narnia is under the care of a benevolent, kindly creator, Pullman’s chaotic universe has no ultimate good authority, controlling and redeeming all. God, or something claiming to be God, dies meaninglessly. There is life after death, but it is a dark, squalid misery from which oblivion is a welcome release.”

Perhaps the saddest fact of all is how these dark and disturbing materials are squarely aimed at children. When children read The Chronicles of Narnia they are getting a distinctively Christian worldview, but just the opposite is true when reading Pullman’s dark materials. Again to quote from a recent article, “…What follows by Pullman is a world of friendly demons, rebellious angels (including one that is homosexual), and witches that are good (not evil).” Pullman was quoted in the Jan. 18, 2007 issue of The Spectator as saying, “The Narnia Chronicles are grotesque, disgusting, ugly, poisonous and nauseating.”

Secularists are in love with this book series and movie, as well as Pullman himself. What a clever and highly effective method for capturing a generation for the secular humanist viewpoint by marketing a blasphemous movie directed at children.

The book series was launched in 1995 and has been widely popular in Europe. It has, in fact, won several awards in the United Kingdom. Even Al Roker of NBC’s Today Show has recently made The Golden Compass (released in the U.K. under the name Northern Lights) a part of his children’s book club, and claiming The Golden Compass is appropriate for grades four and up.

I have ceased to be surprised by Satan’s attacks. I am deeply saddened though by the ever increasing gullibility of people. It seems mankind is continually drawn to the edgy and provocative and downright bored with what is normal, decent, and Godly. I urge you with all my heart to not support Pullman, and those who have produced this movie. Please do not go to see it. Most importantly of all, please do not let your children see it. We are still called upon, as believers, to be set apart from this world. Please recognize a full frontal assault is being waged on our children here. Please don’t fall victim. The dire consequences necessitate we stand firm!

In Christ,

Pastor Allen Raynor
